Photography and ruins
While working as a postdoc on The Waste of the World project at Durham University I became fascinated with the visual cultures of ruination. Detroit has become an iconic site for a particular genre of photography - sometimes dismissed as 'ruin porn' - that documents and aetheticises processes of abandonment, creative destruction and decay. The photographs above were taken by Haiko Hebig, a photographer from Dortmund that I have been working with. In a paper published in Space and Culture I use Haiko's photographs to introduce different narrative fragments that tell different stories of Dortmund's post-industrial landscape in a montage inspired by Walter Benjamin.
